Ball-Chatham CUSD No. 5 Board votes to expel student

At a recent meeting, the Ball-Chatham Community Unit School District (CUSD) No. 5 Board voted to expel student.

The Ball-Chatham Board of Education consists of seven board members elected to serve, without compensation, for overlapping terms of four years each.

Below are the minutes from this meeting, as provided by the board.

The special meeting of the Board of Education of Community Unit District Number Five was May 10, 2016, at the Ball-Chatham District Office which place is within the boundaries of said district.

President Steve Copp called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. and noted that Board members Carter, Copp, Weitzel and Worley were present. Maddox, Sieren and Yurevich were absent. (Yurevich arrived at 5:45 p.m.) Administrators present: Kyle Andrew, Tina Root and Dr. Douglas Wood.

Approval of Agenda

President Copp called for a vote to approve the evening’s agenda.

Weitzel moved to approve the agenda for the Board of Education’s special meeting of May 10, 2016. Upon said motion being seconded by Worley, the Board president called for a vote. All Board members present voted “yes.”

Adjournment to Closed Session

Weitzel moved to adjourn to closed session for the purpose of Student Discipline. Upon said motion being seconded by Carter, the Board President called for a vote. All Board members present voted “yes.”

Action Items from Closed Session

Student Discipline Action - Student A

Carter moved to approve the expulsion of Student A for two years (remainder of the 2015/16 school year, 2016/17 school year and 2017/18 school year) for Acts of Severe Gross Misconduct and Acts of Gross Misconduct. Student A will be referred to the Sangamon County Safe School Program during the expulsion period. If enrolled, Student A must display appropriate attendance, grades, and discipline at Sangamon County Safe Schools in order to remain enrolled. If Student A fails in any of these areas, the expulsion will immediately be implemented. Additionally, after the 2016/17 school year, progress will be reviewed and evaluated to determine if Student A may return to GHS for the 2017/18 school year.

Upon said motion being seconded by Weitzel, the Board president called for a vote. Members Carter, Copp, Weitzel and Worley voted yes. Yurevich abstained due to arriving late to the meeting.

Adjournment of Special Meeting

With there being no further business, President Copp called for a motion to adjourn the special meeting. Worley moved to adjourn the special meeting. Upon said motion being seconded by Weitzel, the president called for a vote. All Board members voted “yes.”

The board meeting adjourned at 5:56 p.m.
