The Riverton Community Unit School District #14 Board of Education met Dec. 1 to discuss assessment data.
Here are the meeting's minutes, as provided by the board:
BOARD DATA RETREAT
Riverton Community Unit School District #14
December 1, 2016
The mission of Riverton CUSD 14 is to create a nurturing environment where we
challenge our students to reach their highest potential.
A Data Retreat of the Board of Education of the Riverton Community Unit School District 14
was held on Thursday, December 1, 2016, in the conference room at the District Office.
Board President Cuffle called the meeting to order at 4:15 p.m.
In addition to Ms. Cuffle, board members present included: Ginger Payne, Shannon
Churchill, Tim Raycraft, and Leeann Kendall, Leigh Ann Hughes, and Tracy Rutter.
Others Present:
Dr. Lance Thurman, Superintendent
Amy Estes, Secretary
There were no requests to address the board.
Dr. Thurman presented district data from Illinoisreportcard.com. The Illinois Report Card
is an annual report released by the Illinois State Board of Education that shows how each
school and district are performing on a wide range of educational goals. It highlights each
school’s and district’s strengths – including academic performance, college and career
readiness, graduation rate, and educational environment – while at the same time
identifying potential areas for improvement. Detailed information helps inform local
discussion and school improvement plans.
MAP testing begins in December for both the elementary and middle schools. MAP data is
used by principals to evaluate student performance relative to growth, proficiency, and
goal setting. The data is also used by districts to determine performance trends by grade
and school, and as a data point for decisions around resources and program effectiveness.
Teacher teams meet to analyze the results of each assessment to understand what concepts
in the curriculum were posing difficulty for students, share ideas, and figure
out the best interventions, which also influence school improvement plans.
Dr. Thurman discussed the results from the second survey of parents. The majority of the
147 respondents were both positive and supportive of current financial efforts. A similar
survey will be done at the end of the third quarter and will specifically look at the area of
mathematics.
Mr. Moore and Ms. Shoufler discussed how common assessment data should be
collaboratively developed so that every teacher has an understanding of what the expected
learning outcomes for their students and a greater understanding of the curriculum.
Creating common assessments is a significantly important PLC (professional learning
community) task. The use of common assessments increases the likelihood that students
will have access to the same curriculum, acquire the same essential knowledge and skills,
take assessments of the same rigor, and have their work judged according to the same
criteria. The assessment needs to be administered to students at nearly the same point in
time relative to the teaching of the curriculum. For example the Algebra 1 benchmark is a
common assessment. However, students in the semester-long course take benchmark #1 at
the end of the first 6 weeks, while the year-long student may take the benchmark at the end
of the first 12 weeks.
Future Agenda Items

The meeting adjourned at 6:12 p.m.
