Craig Law talks "professionalism," but his actions speak more to hypocrisy, the Edgar County Watchdogs (ECW) contended recently.
Law, a Sangamon County Sheriff's deputy and candidate for mayor of Chatham, took back his election petition papers after filing them, made changes and refiled them without getting them notarized, the group claims.
"Considering this candidate stands on doing things the right way, is it asking too much to hold him to his own standard," the ECW asked on its Illinois Leaks website. The group said Law is campaigning on "a platform of 'Professionalism,' based on what appears to be his twenty-one years in law enforcement."
The watchdog group obtained copies of Law's petition papers, and, after comparing the petitions, pointed out discrepancies between the originals and a second, resubmitted set.
The ECW argued that according to Illinois law, "A petition, when presented or filed, shall not be withdrawn, altered, or added to."
The ECW also said that although Law's petition contained mistakes in the paperwork, another candidate was able to withdraw petitions containing flaws and redo the paperwork correctly. The corrections included obtaining new signatures and having the papers notarized again before resubmitting a new packet.
