The regular meeting of the Board of Education of the Athens School District, Athens, Illinois was called to order by President Penrod on March 26, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.


Members Present: Gordon, Ingram, Mayfield, Penrod, Shiffer

Members Absent: Epperson, Woodrum

Administrators Present: Laird, Binegar, Binegar, Reed, Rhoades, Szoke

Visitors Present: C. Dion, K. Whitehurst

Reception of Visitors, Petitions, Communciations

There were no comments from visitors, petitions or communications during the regular meeting.

Approval of Agenda

The agenda was approved as presented.

Consent Agenda

Motion by Mrs. Mayfield, seconded by Mr. Ingram to approve the consent agenda including the February 8, 2018 Special Meeting Minutes, February 26, 2018 Regular Meeting Minutes, February 26, 2018 Executive Session Minutes and Financial Reports.

Approval of Monthly Bills

Motion by Mrs. Mayfield, seconded by Mr. Ingram to approve the bills payable for March in the amount of $116,558.77.

Personnel Recommendations

Motion by Mrs. Mayfield, seconded by Mr. Ingram to approve the reemployment of the following teachers completing their fourth probationary year of employment: Ms. Britani Siegert, physical education teacher at Athens High School, Mr. Josh Ruben, special education teacher at Athens High School, Ms. Jennifer Davis, 4th grade teacher at Cantrall Intermediate School, and Ms. Katie Whitehurst, 4th grade teacher at Cantrall Intermediate School; the reemployment of the following teachers completing their third probationary year of employment: Ms. Ashley Rowe, mathematics teacher at Athens High School, Ms. Sarah Thoele, 4th grade teacher at Cantrall Intermediate School, Mr. Clem Uptmor, 6th grade mathematics teacher at Cantrall Intermediate School, and Ms. Abigail Knox, special education teacher at Athens Junior High School; the reemployment of the following teachers completing their second probationary year of employment: Ms. Drew Kays, 6th grade Language Arts teacher at Cantrall Intermediate School, Ms. Cara Bell, 7th/8th grade Language Arts teacher at Athens Junior High School, and Ms. Kristi Reller, special education teacher at Athens High School; the reemployment of the following teachers completing their first probationary year of employment: Ms. Kiersten Edgar, Agriculture teacher at Athens High School, Ms. Brianna Cummings, 6th grade science teacher at Cantrall Intermediate School, Ms. Maggie Adkins, 6th grade Language Arts teacher at Cantrall Intermediate School, and Ms. Emalie Hemberger, mathematics teacher at Athens High School, effective for the 2018-19 school year.

Motion by Mrs. Mayfield, seconded by Mr. Ingram to approve the reemployment of the following administrators: Mr. Matt Rhoades, Principal at Athens Junior High School, Mr. Bill Reed, Principal at Athens High School, Mr. Eric Szoke, Principal at Cantrall Elementary School, and Ms. Stacey Binegar, Principal at Cantrall Intermediate School, effective for the 2018-19 school year.

Motion by Mrs. Mayfield, seconded by Mr. Ingram to accept the extra duty resignations of Mr. Curtis Dion, from his position as JV boys basketball coach at Athens High School and Mr. Derek Hughes, from his position as track coach at Athens Junior High School, effective immediately and approve the extra duty employment of Ms. Jen Rhoades as assistant track coach at Athens High School and Ms. Cara Bell as track coach at Athens Junior High School, effective for the 2017-18 school year.

Adopt 2018-19 School Calendar

Motion by Mrs. Mayfield, seconded by Mr. Ingram to adopt the 2018-19 school calendar as presented by the administration.

Approve Annual Membership with IHSA

Motion by Mrs. Mayfield, seconded by Mr. Ingram to approve the renewal of the District’s membership with the Illinois High School Association for the 2018-19 school year.

Approve Architect for Building Remodel

Motion by Mrs. Mayfield, seconded by Mr. Ingram to approve the contract with BLDD as the District Architect for the Building Remodel.

Informational Items

Construction Management Update

Mr. Laird updated the Board on RFQ’s received and set a date of April 9, 2018, at 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. for interviewing the two finalists selected.

Bond Issue Update

Mr. Laird presented the time frame for issuing Bonds for the remodel project.

Security Update

Mr. Laird reported on options for adding police presence at the District campuses.

Enrollment Report

The enrollment report was presented for the Board’s review.

Suspension Report

The suspension report was presented for the Board’s review.

Principal’s Reports

Mr. Reed, Mr. Rhoades, Mrs. Binegar, Mr. Szoke reported on recent and upcoming activities at their schools.

There were no announcements.

Mr. Penrod adjourned the meeting at 8:07 p.m.
