Springfield FD responds to 557 fires in 2017

Springfield Fire Department responded to 2681 calls in 2017 - 3.5 percent less than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Springfield included 557 fires - 246 structure fires, 75 vehicle fires and 236 other fires. The fire department also responded to 11 calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $5,518,675 in fire loss - or about $9,908 per fire.

The department also received 2113 false calls, including 57 malicious calls and 2056 other false calls.

The calls resulted in 21 civilian fire-related injuries and two civilian fire-related deaths. Additionally, 11 fire service members were injured in fire-related incidents and 17 were injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Springfield Fire Department had an annual budget of $117,819 in 2017.

The Springfield Firefighter's Pension Fund, which has 215 active employees and 254 retired or inactive employees, was $19,371,794 in debt as of February 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $38,513 for every fire in 2016.
