ABRAHAM LINCOLN MEMORIAL HOSPITAL: Step Away From The Salmonella

Salmonella

Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital issued the following announcement on July 13.

Throw out the Honey Smacks and if you store anything that resembles the sugary cereal in your cupboard, throw that out, too, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) after an outbreak sickened more than 100 people from 33 states.

Symptoms of salmonella can include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps and will develop between 12 and 72 hours after infection, according to the CDC. People with compromised immune systems are particularly at risk for a more severe reaction as well as the very young and elderly.

“Anyone who suspects they may have salmonella food poisoning should contact their physician immediately,” said Raj Govindaiah, MD, senior vice president and chief medical officer of Memorial Health System. “People need to be aware of and cooperate with food product recalls. Salmonella poisoning can be unpleasant in mild cases and potentially fatal if untreated.”
