Village of La Grange Board of Fire and Police Commissioners met Aug. 1.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

1. CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL

A meeting of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners (BOFPC) of the Village of La Grange was held on August 1, 2019 in the lower level conference room of the Village Hall and was called to order at 6:02 p.m.

PRESENT: (and constituting a quorum): Chairman Hoffenberg, Commissioner Boersma and Commissioner Levato.

ABSENT: None

ALSO PRESENT: Andrianna Peterson, Village Manager, Kevin Noreikis, Intern, Terrence Vavra, Fire Chief, and Kurt Bluder, Police Chief.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES- July 8, 2019

The minutes of the July 8, 2019 meeting were presented for approval. After consideration, it was moved by Commissioner Boersma and seconded by Commissioner Levato that the minutes be approved. Motion carried.

BUSINESS AT HAND

A. Appointment/Promotion – Ken Uher – Chief Bluder reported that Sergeant Erik Berg has indicated he will retire July 12, 2019. Due to his retirement, Chief Bluder requested that the Village Manager approve a promotion to the rank of Sergeant. Per Chapter IV A, Section 3 of the Rules and Regulations for the Village of La Grange Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, Chief Bluder requested approval to promote Officer Ken Uher to the rank of Sergeant. Officer Uher is next on the Police Departments Promotional Eligibility List. Officer Uher is a fifteen (15) year veteran of the La Grange Police Department, serving as an investigator and squad leader.

A motion to promote Officer Ken Uher to Sergeant was made by Commissioner Boersma and Seconded by Commissioner Levato. Motion carried.

B. Appointment/Promotion – Adam Coleman – Chief Bluder Reported that Sergeant Tom Cimbalista has indicated that he will retire July 31, 2019. Due to his retirement, Chief Bluder requested that the Village Manager approve a promotion to the rank of Sergeant. Per Chapter IV A, Section 3 of the Rules and Regulations for the Village of La Grange Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, Chief Bluder requested approval to promote Investigator Coleman to the rank of Sergeant. Investigator Coleman is an almost six (6) year veteran of the La Grange Police Department and has served the last three years as an investigator.

A motion to promote Investigator Coleman to Sergeant was made by Commissioner Boersma and seconded by Commissioner Levato. Motion Carried.

C. Amendment – Police Officer Final Eligibility List – Chief Bluder provided an update to the Commission regarding two candidates on the eligibility roster (Kim and Scalise). After contacting these candidates, Chief Bluder discovered that these two individuals have either declined additional consideration in the hiring process for police officer, or have been determined to be ineligible to continue in the hiring process.

A motion to strike Kim and Scalise from the eligibility register was made by Commissioner Boersma and seconded by Commissioner Levato. Motion Carried.

D. Discussion – Due to the promotions of Officer Uher and Investigator Coleman to Sergeant, Chief Bluder reported that the current Police Sergeant Eligibility List has been exhausted. After discussion with the Commission, it was decided to move forward with developing a process to create a new Police Sergeant Eligibility List.

4. OLD BUSINESS

A. Update – Firefighter/Paramedic Eligibility List Process – Chief Vavra reported to the Commission that 53 candidates have signed up to take the written examination. The written examination will take place on Saturday, August 17th at LT High school.

5. NEW BUSINESS

A. Police Officer Oral Interview Schedule – Chief Bluder reported that there are now seven candidates remaining on the eligibility roster. The remaining Oral Interviews will begin in September.

6. PUBLIC COMMENT

None.

7. CLOSED SESSION

None

8. ADJOURNMENT

Since there was no further business before the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, it was moved by Commissioner Boersma and seconded by Chairman Hoffenberg that the meeting was adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
