Village of La Grange Board of Fire and Police Commissioners met Sept. 27.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

1. CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL

A meeting of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners (BOFPC) of the Village of La Grange was held on September 27, 2019 in the lower level conference room of the Village Hall and was called to order at 9:03 a.m.

PRESENT: (and constituting a quorum): Chairman Hoffenberg, Commissioner Boersma and Commissioner Levato.

ABSENT: None

ALSO PRESENT: Andrianna Peterson, Village Manager, Terrence Vavra, Fire Chief, and Kurt Bluder, Police Chief.

2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES- SEPTEMBER 10, 2019

The minutes of the September 10, 2019 meeting were presented for approval. After consideration, it was moved by Commissioner Boersma and seconded by Commissioner Levato that the minutes be approved. Motion carried.

3. BUSINESS AT HAND

A. Promotional Appointment – Fire Department – James Baum – Chief Vavra reported to the Commission that with the retirement of Acting Captain Brian Sible on September 11, 2019, the Fire Department has an opening for a Lieutenant. With the approval of the Village Manager, Chief Vavra requested the promotion of the next person on the Fire Lieutenant eligibility register. The register is dated March 21, 2018 and expires March 20, 2021. The first person on the register is James Baum. James Baum began his fire service in October, 2010 as a Firefighter/Paramedic. Chief Vavra requested that the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners appoint the next candidate on the Fire Lieutenant Promotional Eligibility Register, Firefighter/Paramedic James Baum, to the rank of Fire Lieutenant, effective October 17, 2019.

A motion to promote the next candidate on the Fire Lieutenant Promotional Eligibility Register, James Baum, to the rank of Fire Lieutenant was moved by Commissioner Boersma, and seconded by Chairman Hoffenberg. Motion Carried.

B. Approval–FinalFirefighter/ParamedicEligibilityRegister–ChiefVavrareportedtothe Commission that the Final Firefighter/Paramedic Eligibility Register is on the agenda for approval. At the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners meeting on September 10, 2019, the Commission approved the Initial Eligibility Register for Firefighter/Paramedic as provided for in Chapter IIIB, Section 4 of the Rules and Regulations of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners. The approval of the Initial Eligibility Register triggered a 10-day period where the candidates were allowed to request preference points (Veteran, Education, and Experience). Chief Vavra reported that he reviewed the points that were requested by the candidates and concurs with the evaluation done by I/O Solutions. If approved, the Final Eligibility Register is effective September 27, 2019 and is valid for a two-year period that expires on September 26, 2021.

After consideration, a motion was made by Commissioner Levato and seconded by Chairman Hoffenberg to approve the Final Firefighter/Paramedic Eligibility register.

C. Oral Interview – Police Officer – Oral interviews for the position of Police Officer were conducted.

4. OLD BUSINESS

A. Update – Police Officer Eligibility Process – Chief Bluder updated the Commission on the Police Officer Eligibility Process. At the September 10, 2019 meeting of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, the Call for Examination process was initiated with I/O Solutions. Saturday, November 2 at Lyons Township South High School has been reserved for the orientation and proctoring of the exam. Applications for the written exam opened Thursday, September 12, and the deadline is Thursday, October 10. Chief Bluder reported that as of Friday, September 27, 8 applications have been received to take the written exam.

B. Police Sergeant Promotional Process Update – Chief Bluder updated the Commission on the Police Sergeant Promotional Process. An orientation for the Police Sergeant Promotional Process will be held Friday, September 27, 2019. Nine of the eligible 16 candidates will be taking the promotional exam.

C. Next Meeting Date – The regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 has been cancelled. The next meeting of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners will be on Wednesday, October 23, 2019.

8. ADJOURNMENT

Since there was no further business before the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, it was moved by Commissioner Boersma and seconded by Commissioner Levato that the meeting was adjourned at 9:38 a.m.
