Springfield FD responds to 520 fires in 2018

Springfield Fire District responded to 2880 calls in 2018 - 7.4 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Springfield included 520 fires - 233 structure fires, 84 vehicle fires and 203 other fires. The fire department also responded to nine calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $6,551,351 in fire loss - or about $12,599 per fire.

The department also received 2351 false calls, including 52 malicious calls and 2299 other false calls.

The calls resulted in 15 civilian fire-related injuries and two civilian fire-related deaths. Additionally, 23 fire service members were injured in fire-related incidents and 23 were injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Springfield Fire District had an annual budget of $125,128 in 2018.

The Springfield Firefighter's Pension Fund, which has 214 active employees and 255 retired or inactive employees, was $692,207 positive as of February 2017, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $1,243 for every fire in 2017.
