A new power plant oriented around clean energy will be opening in Decatur. Archer Daniels Midland and 8 Rivers Capital LLC agreed to open the Broadwing Clean Energy Complex near ADM's Decatur processing complex.
The plant has been described as "game-changing" and has received praise from state officials.
"I constantly work to bring more jobs to my district! This is huge" Rep. Sue Scherer (D-Decatur) in an April 15 post to her Facebook page.
A news release said that the facility would create 280 megawatts of non-carbon oriented power to help decarbonize the electricity, industrial and electricity industries, with the ultimate goal of 100% clean power.
The plant will be among the first Allam-Fetvedt cycle power plants with zero emissions. ADM's carbon capture and storage system enable the plant to store carbon safely a mile and a half underground.
The 8 Rivers Company will make final investment decisions in 2022, and operations are planned to begin in 2025. Warwick Capital Partners LLP will also be a development financing partner through their offshoot Warwick Carbon Solutions. The project will result in over half a billion dollars being invested in Central Illinois.
The project is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and ADM. It will be an improvement on an already existing carbon storage center in Decatur.
