Village of La Grange Board of Fire and Police Commissioners met Nov. 21.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

1. CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL

A special meeting of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners (BOFPC) of the Village of La Grange was held on November 21, 2022. The meeting was called to order at 5:03 p.m.

PRESENT: (and constituting a quorum): Commissioner Hoffenberg and Commissioner Levato.

ABSENT: Commissioner Boersma

ALSO PRESENT: Charity Jones, Acting Village Manager; Robert Wardlaw, Police Chief; and Terry Vavra, Fire Chief

2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES – October 19, 2022

The minutes of the October 19, 2022 meeting were presented for approval. After consideration, it was moved by Commissioner Levato and seconded by Commissioner Hoffenberg that the minutes be approved. Motion carried by roll call vote.

3. BUSINESS AT HAND

A. Amendments – Firefighter / Paramedic Eligibility Register

Chief Vavra presented that Candidate #4 Jacob Weingardt be removed from the eligibility register based on the background investigation. After discussion, a motion was made by Commissioner Commissioner Levato and seconded by Commissioner Hoffenberg to remove candidate #4 from the eligibility register. Motion carried on a roll call vote.

Chief Vavra noted that Candidate #4 was the last candidate on the current eligibility list. B. Approval – Initial Eligibility Register – Police Officer

Chief Wardlaw stated that he is seeking approval of the initial eligibility register so the process can advance to the next step – the calculation of preference points. After discussion, a motion was made by Commissioner Levato and seconded by Commissioner Hoffenberg to approved the initial eligibility register. Motion carried on a roll call vote.

C. Call for Examinations – Alternative Certified Police Officer Eligibility Register

Chief Wardlaw reviewed the request to create an alternative register for lateral hires to run parallel to current officer eligibility register in process now. He noted that all department field training officers are currently training staff. Hiring certified officers reduces the required time from hire to independent patrol by 16 weeks. Commissioners Hoffenberg and Levato each noted that they hope the lateral list will yield results and noted that individuals seem interested in the opportunity.

A motion was made by Commissioner Levato and seconded by Commissioner Hoffenberg to approve the call for examinations for an alternative certified policy officer eligibility register.

4. OLD BUSINESS

None.

5. NEW BUSINESS

The Commissioners discussed their availability for a December meeting the week of December 12- 16, rather than the regularly scheduled date of December 23.

6. PUBLIC COMMENT

None.

7. CLOSED SESSION

None.

8. ADJOURNMENT

Since there was no further business before the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, it was moved by Commissioner Levato and seconded by Commissioner Hoffenberg that the meeting was adjourned at 5:13 p.m. Motion carried by roll call vote.
