On this Veterans Day, it is important to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who have served in the United States armed forces. These individuals have answered the call to protect the freedom of our nation, and we owe them a debt of gratitude.
Since the Revolutionary War, more than 41 million Americans have served in our nation's military. The first veterans were part of the Continental Army, established in 1775 under the command of George Washington. Throughout history, the United States has declared war 11 times and fought in conflicts around the world.
Through their sacrifices, our veterans have safeguarded the ideals of our founding fathers, saved our nation, protected the innocent, and liberated the oppressed. Their courage and dedication deserve to be recognized not just on Veterans Day, but every day.
As we honor our veterans, it is important to remember that they have much to teach us. Their stories of purpose, leadership, work ethic, and community are truly inspiring. The Illinois Veteran's Project is one initiative that captures and preserves the stories of Illinois men and women who have served in the armed services. The project, launched by the Illinois State Library, aims to create a permanent record of the names and stories of Illinois war veterans and civilians who have contributed to our state and country during times of conflict.
In addition to the Illinois Veteran's Project, we must also recognize the contributions of current House Republican legislators who have served in the U.S. Military. One such legislator is Rep. Wayne Rosenthal, who served in the Illinois Air National Guard/United States Air Force for 30 years before retiring in 2001. Rep. Rosenthal's military experience brings valuable insight and expertise to his role in the Illinois General Assembly.
On this Veterans Day, let us remember and honor all veterans for their selflessness and dedication to our great nation. Their sacrifices have shaped our history and secured our future. To all the veterans in the United States armed forces, we say thank you for your service.
