This week, the Illinois House of Representatives passed House Bill 2900, which seeks to prohibit hunting competitions involving fur-bearing animals such as coyotes and raccoons. State Representative Wayne Rosenthal (R-Morrisonville) has voiced his opposition to the bill, arguing that it could negatively impact efforts to control animal populations that pose a threat to communities.
"Hunting competitions help control the overpopulation of coyotes and racoons, but HB2900 labels these competitions as inhumane," said Rep. Rosenthal. "Hunting coyotes is legal year-round in Illinois, yet holding competitions that raise funds for local charities is frowned upon by those who live in the suburbs who are not adversely affected by coyotes."
The Department of Natural Resources (DNR), which sets rules and regulations for hunting competitions, does not support HB2900. The DNR manages 13 different species in Illinois, including coyotes, underscoring the importance of wildlife management in the state.
The proposed legislation could also affect events like the Annual Squirrel Bowl in Carlinville, which raises $200,000 for local charities such as Project Third Day, HOOAH Deer Hunt for Heroes, Special Operations Wounded Warrior, and Honored American Veterans Afield.
"I get calls every year from my constituents telling me they lost their livestock to coyotes, and they want something done and their concerns are valid," continued Rep. Rosenthal.
Having passed through the House with a roll call of 62-45, HB2900 will now proceed to the Senate chamber for voting.
