The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that, weather permitting, construction on Interstate 57 in Iroquois County will commence on Monday, May 20. The designated work zone extends from mile marker 279 near Onarga to mile marker 286 north of Gilman.
The project includes milling and resurfacing I-57 along with the ramps at the Illinois 54 interchange (exit 280) in Onarga and the U.S. 24 interchange (exit 283) in Gilman. One lane in each direction will be closed during this $27.9 million project, which is scheduled for completion by year's end.
Motorists are advised to anticipate delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area due to potential slow and stopped traffic. To circumvent the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes is recommended. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey posted limits, refrain from using mobile devices, and remain alert for workers and equipment.
