Consumer fireworks remain illegal in Illinois under the Pyrotechnic Use Act, which was enacted in 1942. This legislation prohibits the sale, possession, and use of all consumer fireworks within the state. Although such items are legal in many other states, firecrackers, bottle rockets, and roman candles are not permitted in Illinois. Violations of this law can lead to significant fines or imprisonment, particularly when fireworks are purchased out-of-state and transported across state lines.

Illinois is one of only three states that ban all or most consumer fireworks. Additionally, certain municipalities and villages may have their own regulations that further restrict the use of devices deemed legal by the Pyrotechnic Use Act. Novelty fireworks-type devices that are not classified as consumer fireworks remain legal in Illinois; however, local ordinances should be checked for specific restrictions. For instance, sparklers are banned within the city limits of Chicago.

According to statistics from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, thousands of individuals sustain injuries from fireworks-related accidents annually, with some incidents resulting in fatalities. The importance of safety cannot be overstated when handling any type of fireworks device due to the risk of severe eye injuries and burns if used improperly.

Illinois residents can safely enjoy large-scale and supervised fireworks displays organized by villages, counties, and municipalities that have obtained proper permits. Numerous events occur around Independence Day throughout the state. Furthermore, public displays at County Fairs and the State Fair offer additional opportunities for safe enjoyment.

For more information on approved and prohibited consumer fireworks as well as unregulated novelties, residents are encouraged to consult the complete list provided by the Illinois State Fire Marshal.
