Today marks Illinois Sweet Corn Appreciation Day, a celebration of the state's official vegetable. Residents are encouraged to enjoy locally grown sweet corn in recognition of this special day.

Illinois is renowned for its agricultural output, extending beyond just corn and soybeans. The state's fertile soil and favorable climate contribute to its status as a leading producer of various specialty crops. Among these are pumpkins, peaches, apples, grapes, horseradish, and melons. In total, Illinois farms cultivate over 64 types of vegetables and 15 varieties of fruit and nut crops, generating nearly $500 million in sales annually for local farmers.
