Starting January 1, 2025, Illinois will formally recognize the United States Space Force as an official branch of the United States Armed Forces. This development follows legislation sponsored by State Senator Tom Bennett (R-Gibson City) aimed at honoring the dedication and innovation of those serving in the Space Force.
“Recognizing the United Space Force as a distinct branch of our military honors the remarkable efforts of those who defend our interests in space,” said Sen. Bennett. “I am honored to have sponsored this bill. I believe their work is crucial to maintaining our nation’s leadership in space.”
Governor Pritzker recently signed House Bill 5640, sponsored by Senator Bennett, which amends state law to include the Space Force wherever the Armed Forces are mentioned.
The United States Space Force, established on December 20, 2019, operates within the Department of the Air Force. Its mission is to ensure that the U.S. can operate freely in space, manage space operations, and protect American interests.
