City of Athens City Council met Aug. 12
Here are the minutes provided by the council:
The City of Athens Council met for a regularly scheduled council meeting on Monday August 12, 2024. Mayor Chris Reichert called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm. The roll call indicated that Alderman Amy Chernowsky, Alderman Kevin Puma, Alderman Rachel Lantz, Alderman Kyra Leinberger, and Alderman , were present. Also in attendance was Police Chief Tim Becker, Librarian Ginger Newingham, and City Clerk Rhonda Ethell.
All present participated in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Chief Tim Becker gave the police report. Advised new squad car was in, Officer Joe Ray completed the academy. Advised for the month of July they had 116 calls of service, 36 traffic stops, 12 citations issued, 24 verbal warning and 1 crash. There were 6 ordinance violations, 5 warnings issued and 1 citation issued. Advised council of the hiring practices for the police department after the issues in Sangamon County.
Ginger Newingham gave the library report. Had a great summer program. Upcoming they have a meet the teacher night, the home school explorers club, a book sale and a reception in honor of Judy Culley. Asked the City if they would consider purchasing new ornaments for the Christmas Tree Lighting, they will get more information on cost.
A motion was made by Alderman Thompson and seconded by Alderman Lantz to approve the treasurer, public works, police, cemetery and office managers reports. Motion was roll called all present in favor voted aye. Motion passed.
A motion was made by Alderman Lantz and seconded by Alderman Chernowsky to approve the paying of bills. Motion was roll called all present in favor voted aye. Motion passed.
A motion was made by Alderman Thompson and seconded by Alderman Leinberger to approve the meeting minutes from July 3, 2024, and July 8, 2024. Motion was roll called all present in favor voted aye. Motion passed.
A motion was made by Alderman Lantz and seconded by Alderman Leinberger to approve all raises for employees that were discussed in executive session. Motion was roll called, all present in favor voted aye. Motion passed.
Public Comment:
Linda Wasilewski and Dawn Ratliff made comments during public comment.
Mayors Comments:
Mayor Reichert advised that the abandoned house on Adams street was purchased and is currently being cleaned up and they are burning brush and advised had some complaints from residents wanting the council to enact a burning ban.
A motion was made by Alderman Lantz o adjourn the meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 7:21 pm.
