Make sure you know how to stay safe around railroad tracks in Springfield and surrounding communities. Here are some important rail safety tips from Operation Lifesaver:

"Always expect a train on any track at any time," advises Operation Lifesaver. "Trains do not run on set schedules, and they can run on any track, in either direction."

Another key tip is to never walk on or near railroad tracks. "Walking on tracks is illegal and dangerous," says the organization. "It takes a mile or more for a train to stop, so by the time a locomotive engineer sees someone or something on the tracks, it’s often too late to stop."

Operation Lifesaver also emphasizes the importance of being aware of your surroundings when driving near railroad crossings. "Turn down your music and air conditioning so you can hear warning signals," they suggest.

Additionally, they recommend stopping at least 15 feet away from flashing red lights, lowered gates, or a ringing bell at railroad crossings.

"Remember that trains are wider than the tracks; they can extend three feet or more beyond the steel rail, putting you at risk even if you’re just standing next to them," warns Operation Lifesaver.

The organization encourages everyone to share these safety tips with friends and family to help prevent accidents around railroad tracks.
