The Illinois College women's soccer team secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Fontbonne University in a non-conference match held on Saturday. The game, played in St. Louis, saw the Lady Blues improve their overall record to 4-5-1 this season.
Fontbonne began the match with an aggressive offensive strategy, recording four shots on target within the first 11 minutes. First-year goalkeeper Sophia Kriegesmann made two critical saves to keep the Griffins at bay. The teams entered halftime with a score of 0-0 after an evenly matched first half.
In the second half, Cassidy Tacker took over goalkeeping duties for Illinois College. In the 61st minute, Haley Sommer capitalized on an intercepted pass from a Griffins defender near the attacking net. Sommer advanced towards the goal and successfully placed a shot just beyond Fontbonne's diving goalkeeper to secure the lead for her team.
Illinois College maintained solid defense throughout the remainder of the match, ultimately holding off Fontbonne's attempts to equalize. Goalkeepers Kriegesmann and Tacker collectively saved 11 shots during their team's victory.
Looking ahead, the Lady Blues are set to commence Midwest Conference play by hosting Knox College on Wednesday, October 3rd at 7:00 PM.
