Illinois College has appointed Jay Rowell as its new golf coach, according to an announcement by Director of Athletics Meghan Roman. Rowell, who has been with the IC athletics department for five seasons, initially took over the program on an interim basis this past spring. During his interim tenure, the Blueboys set four school records, and the Lady Blues secured victories in two out of five tournaments.
"Jay has been a tireless worker and advocate for the entire IC athletics department, and we are thrilled to name him to this position," Roman stated. "We believe Jay will continue to build on the foundation the golf programs have established and will be a wonderful representative of our entire college throughout the process."
Rowell expressed enthusiasm about his new role: "I am excited for the opportunity to continue to serve IC athletics," he said. "I want to thank President Farley, Meghan Roman, and Steve Schweer for the opportunities they have provided for me and the confidence they have shown in me. I can't wait to continue the strong tradition of golf at IC and work with competitive and driven student-athletes!"
In addition to his recent success with golf, Rowell has a notable background in basketball coaching. His achievements include leading the Blueboys' men's basketball team to consecutive Midwest Conference championships and securing berths in the NCAA Tournament, including their first NCAA Tournament victory last season.
Before joining Illinois College, Rowell served as an assistant coach at Knox during the 2018-19 season. He also spent time coaching at Peoria Christian High School and Peoria Central High School. Additionally, he was involved with Tinley Park High School's coaching staff before relocating to Peoria. For six seasons, Rowell was head coach of the Peoria Area Elite 16U AAU program.
Rowell is also recognized for his military service as a United States Air Force veteran with seven years of service, during which he received the Air Force Meritorious Service Award.
