The Illinois College Esports team commenced their 2023 season with a double-header weekend, facing Purdue Northwest and Grandview University. Both opponents were notable contenders from the previous year's MEC 2022, with Purdue Northwest being the runner-ups and Grandview University the champions.

In their match against Purdue Northwest, Illinois College struggled initially in the bottom lane but managed to maintain a competitive stance through strategic plays across the map. By the ten-minute mark, they trailed by only 2k gold. Zachary Dimond, known as "Subsidize," had notable moments against the opposing Grandmaster top laner "Tigerstar." Despite their efforts, Purdue Northwest secured victory in a close first game and dominated the second game.

Coach's player of the game was Zachary Dimond "Subsidize."

On day two, Illinois College faced Grandview University, former MEC Champions and a top-ranked team. They began with strong early-game performance and effective mid-game rotations. Although they led in kills at 6-4 around ten minutes into the game, they never achieved a gold lead. Noah Postin "TheDicey" made an impact by solo killing enemy Master mid laner "Ginqal," allowing him to complete his first mythic item on Heimerdinger.

At ten minutes, Illinois College trailed by less than 2k gold. However, Grandview's superior macro play and team fighting extended their lead to secure victory over Illinois College. The second game saw continued dominance from Grandview through better drafting and execution.

Coach's player of the game was Noah Postin "TheDicey."
