The Illinois College Esports Rocket League team, consisting of Glenn Conway, Dwight Duijeneveld, and Josh Hallanger, secured a victory against Ashland's Eagles on Thursday evening at the Meraki Gaming Center in Jacksonville, Illinois. The team triumphed in games four and five to clinch the match with a final score of 3-2. This win marks the end of their regular season with an overall record of 3-3.
Head Coach David Seering commented on the team's performance: "The team was working to implement new ideas and strategies to work on our midfield coverage and so we struggled as we were adapting our play style. We decided to revert back to a few things from previously as the series went on but we did just enough to win the final game of the regular season."
Seering also addressed upcoming challenges: "The schedule for us is really rough as we're on spring break during the first round of playoffs so the match versus Cornell next week will be extremely hard. I'll have players playing on their old laptops and one player will be on vacation so he'll have terrible ping. I'm still confident that even with those hardships we can beat Cornell next week however."
In Game 1, Illinois College outshot Ashland 7-4 but lost 0-1 after Ashland scored the only goal. Game 2 saw IC staying aggressive, leading to a 2-1 victory with goals from Conway and Hallanger, while Duijeneveld provided an assist.
Game 3 was dominated by Ashland's offense with 13 shots compared to IC's three, resulting in a 2-3 loss for Illinois College despite goals from Conway and Hallanger.
In Game 4, down two games to one, IC responded with another 2-1 victory. Conway scored both goals while matching Duijeneveld's four saves.
Finally, in Game 5, both teams took nine shots each but IC emerged victorious with goals from Conway and Hallanger securing a 2-0 win.
Coach Seering remains optimistic about facing Cornell next week despite logistical challenges due to spring break: "I'm still confident that even with those hardships we can beat Cornell next week."
