Senate Republicans in Illinois are urging Governor J.B. Pritzker to address the state's budget deficit without imposing additional taxes on residents and businesses. The call comes as a report from the Governor’s Office of Management and Budget projects a $3.16 billion shortfall for the next fiscal year. Critics have pointed to Governor Pritzker's increase in state spending, which has grown by over 30% since he took office, reaching $53 billion last year.
Concerns have been heightened by recent tax increases totaling nearly $1 billion, intended to support a budget that includes over $1 billion in healthcare and other benefits for non-citizens. "With state facing $3B deficit, GOP senators call on Gov. JB Pritzker to promise no tax hikes," reported the Chicago Tribune.
Senator Bennett highlighted the financial strain on Illinois residents: “Illinoisans across the state have made their position clear—they’re struggling to make ends meet and cannot afford to cover the cost of Governor Pritzker’s budget crisis.” He urged prioritizing solutions that restore financial stability.
In other developments, a federal judge declared Illinois’ assault weapons ban unconstitutional. The law had banned certain semi-automatic firearms and high-capacity magazines but faced legal challenges claiming it violated constitutional rights. Judge Stephen P. McGlynn ruled against it, though an appeal was filed by Attorney General Kwame Raoul.
Senator Bennett expressed hope that efforts would shift towards addressing violence through enforcement against illegal gun possession and improved mental health support.
The fall Veto Session began with little legislative action but included Senate Republicans urging Governor Pritzker not to raise taxes amidst the looming deficit. Lawmakers also recognized veterans during their annual floor tribute.
Meanwhile, Senate Bill 3968, aimed at banning carbon sequestration injections near sole-source aquifers, was discussed but not voted on due to calls for further study.
A Veterans Memorial Display is now open at the Illinois State Capitol until November 25th, hosted by the Illinois Senate Republican Caucus. It features electronic displays of veterans' photos and stories along with a message wall for visitors.
As of now, Illinois owes over $1.39 billion to state vendors with thousands of pending vouchers awaiting payment.
