In the closing moments of the Illinois House of Representatives' 2024 Veto Session, a motion was made by House Republican Floor Leader Patrick Windhorst to adjourn the session "sine die," which would have concluded the 103rd General Assembly without scheduling a future meeting. However, this motion was rejected by House Democrats, allowing for the assembly to reconvene in early January during what is termed a "lame duck session."

A lame duck session occurs when members of an outgoing General Assembly meet after new members have been elected but before they are sworn in. This period can be used to address unresolved legislative issues from previous sessions or tackle urgent matters requiring immediate attention.

There is speculation that this year's lame duck session could see more partisan gun control laws being passed through the General Assembly.
