State Representative Mike Coffey, a Republican from Springfield, has expressed his support for parental rights in choosing educational experiences for their children. The "Homeschool Act," known as HB 2827, was discussed in committee and passed despite opposition from many families who prefer homeschooling or private education.

The bill requires non-public schools to register annually with the Illinois State Board of Education. Homeschools must submit a Homeschool Declaration Form or face fines and possible imprisonment. Additionally, administrators are required to provide personal information about themselves and their students to authorities.

Public opposition to the bill has been significant. Over 49,000 residents filed witness slips against HB 2827, and thousands gathered at the State Capitol to voice their concerns about state intervention in homeschooling.

Coffey stated, "The Homeschool Act is yet another unfunded mandate that takes more power away from homeschool families and students and gives it to the state." He added, "I stand with the thousands of Illinois families who agree that these burdensome regulations seek to solve a problem that does not exist."

He further emphasized the need for legislators to empower parents rather than impose restrictive mandates: “Illinois legislators should empower parents to choose the best educational options for their children, and I oppose constraining mandates on responsible parents.”

Despite Republican opposition, HB 2827 passed in the Education Policy Committee and will now proceed to the House Floor for a vote. Those opposed can sign a petition or file a witness slip at ilga.gov.

Representative Coffey serves Illinois' 95th House District, which includes parts of Sangamon County as well as portions of Macon and Christian Counties.
