State Rep. Wayne Rosenthal, R-Morrisonville, alongside a bipartisan group of Illinois legislators, commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War's conclusion at a press conference in Springfield. The event, held on Wednesday, aimed to honor veterans and reflect on the Fall of Saigon.
Joining Rosenthal at the press conference were state Rep. Hoan Huynh, D-Chicago, state Rep. Dan Swanson, R-Alpha, Sen. Mark Walker, D-Arlington Heights, and state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego. All attendees, except Huynh, who is the son of a soldier from the Army of the Republic of Vietnam, are veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. Sen. Walker served in the Vietnam War. They collectively expressed their gratitude to those who served in the Vietnam conflict and those who advocated for veterans’ support upon their return.
Rosenthal remarked, “As we mark the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, I stand with deep humility and gratitude for the men and women I served with, and for all those who answered our nation’s call during one of the most challenging periods in American history. We served with courage and conviction—not for recognition, but out of duty.” He emphasized the importance of remembering the more than 58,000 who lost their lives and ensuring their sacrifice is not forgotten.
Rep. Huynh shared personal reflections, stating, “My father lost friends, family, brothers-in-arms and his country as a result of the war. After the fall of Saigon, he was held captive and tortured for his role in fighting to preserve democracy alongside U.S. forces.” He expressed pride in his family’s resettlement in the United States and gratitude to those who made sacrifices for freedom.
Sen. Walker acknowledged the bravery of Vietnam veterans, saying, "Today, we recognize the honor and dignity of our service members.”
Rep. Kifowit highlighted the ongoing impact of Vietnam veterans, noting, “Their strength, resilience, and tireless advocacy have helped secure the benefits, recognition, and support that today’s Veterans receive. We owe them a debt of lasting gratitude for their enduring impact.”
Rep. Swanson added, “More than 58,000 Americans and over 2000 Illinoisans gave their lives in Vietnam. Today we resolve to remember and honor their sacrifice.” He emphasized the need to remember those still suffering from visible and invisible wounds, as well as the missing and unaccounted for.
