State Representative Martin McLaughlin from Lake Barrington has introduced House Bill 2083, aiming to recognize Pope Leo XIV's elevation to the Papacy. The Pope, originally from Chicago, marks a historical first for Illinois and the United States.
The proposed bill seeks to establish a commemorative area on the Illinois Capitol grounds. It also includes setting up a commission intended to receive donations, ensuring no taxpayer funds are used. Funding will come from donations and sales of a new specialty state license plate.
“This is not a religious monument. It’s about acknowledging a truly historic moment,” said Rep. McLaughlin. He emphasized the global significance of an American, particularly an Illinoisan, being elevated to such a high position in religious leadership.
In response to Pope Leo XIV's selection, public enthusiasm was evident with hundreds of thousands of related items sold in just one week.
The proposal has garnered bipartisan support but remains stalled in committee as the General Assembly’s Spring session nears its end. This delay has raised concerns among lawmakers.
“Many members are asking the same thing I am: ‘Why isn’t this moving?’” McLaughlin questioned, highlighting past symbolic resolutions passed by the assembly.
McLaughlin stressed that the initiative focuses on history and pride rather than religious endorsement. “This Pope’s message of tolerance and global cooperation deserves recognition, not gridlock,” he stated.
