Ameren Illinois customers should prepare for higher electricity costs this summer. The utility company announced that residential customers using 10,000 kilowatt hours annually will face an increase of 18% to 22%, translating to approximately $45 more per month from June through September. Prices are expected to stabilize near current levels by October 1.
The price hike is due to increased supply costs from energy companies selling electricity to utilities, a factor beyond Ameren's control. Although Ameren Illinois profits from delivering electricity, it does not benefit from this price increase.
“These results highlight the ongoing energy challenge in downstate Illinois and the need for a more robust resource planning process on the state level,” stated an Ameren Illinois spokesperson. They emphasized the importance of "balanced solutions, including transmission, energy storage, renewables, natural gas, nuclear, energy efficiency, and demand response" to ensure affordable and reliable energy for residents and businesses.
