The Illinois House of Representatives has passed Senate Bill 1950, a measure that permits physician-assisted suicide. Despite opposition from all Republican members and some Democrats, the bill secured enough votes to advance to the Senate for further consideration.

State Representative Charlie Meier, a Republican from Okawville, voiced his objections during the debate. Meier expressed concerns about potential exploitation of individuals with disabilities if the legislation is enacted.

“If this bill passes, who is there to protect our most vulnerable,” questioned Meier. “This bill terrifies the families of our most vulnerable. They are happy to see their loved ones riding bikes and swimming in pools now, even though they were on hospice and would have qualified for this. They were never given the opportunity in the setting the state had them. They would be dead now. Thank God they’re not. Please vote no.”

The debate surrounding this contentious issue continues as it moves forward in the legislative process.
