Over the weekend, Illinois Democrats passed a budget that has been described as the largest in the state's history. Critics argue that it relies heavily on tax increases and borrowing from special funds to support long-term spending. Concerns have been raised about allocations for illegal immigrants, pay raises for state legislators, and policies that could increase energy and tax bills.
Governor Pritzker has stated he would veto any budget adversely affecting working families. "I look forward to him vetoing this budget, considering the working families are the ones who will be hit the hardest," was expressed in opposition.
The Illinois House of Representatives also passed Senate Bill 1950, which permits physician-assisted suicide. Despite opposition from Republicans and some Democrats, it advanced to the Senate. During a floor debate, concerns were voiced: “If this bill passes, who is there to protect our most vulnerable? This bill terrifies the families of our most vulnerable."
Additionally, House Resolution 283 was passed to honor Caleb Thomas Elliott of Troy, who died accidentally while working with electricity. The resolution designates August 11, 2025, as Caleb’s Legacy: Electrical Awareness for a Safer Tomorrow Day. It aims to promote education on electrical safety.
Rep. Meier announced his return to farming after leaving Springfield.
