State Representative Mike Coffey has co-sponsored two significant pieces of legislation aimed at reducing the cost of prescription drugs in Illinois. The Prescription Drug Affordability Act (HB1697) is designed to alleviate the financial burden on families by lowering drug prices and increasing transparency among Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs). Under this new law, PBMs are required to submit annual reports and undergo audits to ensure compliance with regulations against spread pricing. Governor Pritzker signed this bill into law on July 1, 2025.

In addition to HB1697, Representative Coffey also co-sponsored a bill targeting the cost of insulin. This legislation sets a cap on insulin prices at $35 per month, aiming to make it more affordable for diabetics who rely on it for their health and well-being. "This bill will provide relief to individuals who are diabetic and rely on insulin to maintain their health," said Rep. Coffey. "Families across Illinois will benefit from this low-cost medication that improves an individual’s quality of life."

Both legislative measures reflect a commitment by Illinois lawmakers to address the high costs of essential medications and improve access for residents.
