Illinois College women’s tennis predicted fourth in Midwest Conference preseason poll

The Illinois College women's tennis team has been selected to finish fourth in the upcoming Midwest Conference (MWC) season, according to the league's annual preseason coaches' poll announced Thursday.

Grinnell College is projected to win the MWC women's tennis championship for a sixth consecutive year. The Pioneers received 36 points and six first-place votes from the conference's seven head coaches. Grinnell concluded last season with a 19-10 overall record, going undefeated in conference play and securing its 19th league title as well as a 14th appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Illinois College finished last season with a 14-10 record, including a 3-3 mark in conference matches. The Lady Blues reached the Midwest Conference team tournament for the first time in program history. Head Coach Scott Weakley returns five players from last year's roster, including seniors Lilly and Sabrina Ingram.

Lake Forest was ranked second in the poll with 31 points and one first-place vote, followed by Cornell in third with 26 points. Illinois College earned 19 points for fourth place, while Lawrence (14), Ripon (11), and Monmouth (10) rounded out the rankings.

The new season begins on Saturday, August 30, when six teams will compete in non-conference matches. Conference play is set to start on Saturday, September 13.

The regular season will conclude with the MWC Women's Tennis Individual Tournament scheduled for October 18-19 at Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison, Wisconsin. In spring, the top four teams will compete at the MWC Women's Tennis Team Tournament on May 2. The winner of this single-elimination event will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament.
