State Representatives Mike Coffey and Wayne Rosenthal are organizing a holiday toy drive in partnership with Toys for Tots to support children in Sangamon County. The initiative invites the public to donate new, unwrapped toys at their Springfield district office until December 20. Collected toys will be distributed to families in need during the holiday season.
Representative Coffey emphasized the purpose of the drive, stating, “The holiday season and Christmas day is about giving thanks and bringing people together. I’m proud to join my colleague in our efforts to help children experience joy and unite people in the community for a common cause. A small act of kindness can have a big impact on children, and this is one way we can teach children and community members the value of giving.”
Rosenthal highlighted the financial difficulties many families are facing: “Many families are struggling with high gas prices and utility bills and trying to make ends meet these days. If you are fortunate to have a little extra and able to donate, please join us to help bring a smile to a child during the Christmas season with a baby doll, a baseball and glove or even an erector set, Lincoln Logs, or Legos to encourage creativity in a child.”
The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation was founded by the U.S. Marine Corps in 1991 with the goal of providing hope for disadvantaged children during Christmas by raising funds, purchasing toys, and educating the public.
Last year’s drive in Sangamon County provided support to more than eight thousand children.
Mike Coffey was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 95th House District in 2023, succeeding Tim Butler. The district covers parts of Sangamon County—including areas of Springfield and the villages of Chatham and Rochester—as well as portions of Macon and Christian Counties.
For those interested in participating, donations can be dropped off at E-1 Stratton Office Building, 401 S. Spring Street, Springfield, IL 62706 through December 20. Additional information is available by contacting Rep. Coffey’s office.
