An online course focusing on palliative care was recognized earlier this month with an Innovative Initiative Award (IIA) from the Illinois Council on Continuing Higher Education (ICCHE).

The course is free and taken online through a partnership between the University of Illinois at Springfield (UI Springfield), the School of Medicine at Southern Illinois University, the Illinois Hospital Association, and the Illinois HomeCare and Hospice Council (IHHC).

UI Springfield said the ICCHE honored the program because it can be used in other areas and it meets a need within the community.

“One Patient, One Team: Palliative Care Approaches Across the Continuum” focuses on the best practices within the field, and encourages cooperation and education for medical professionals to best serve this area of medicine and to limit readmissions to hospitals.

Palliative care refers to specialized care to relieve symptoms or emotional trauma that results from a serious illness. The National Cancer Institute states that the practice consists of multiple disciplines within health care.

UI Springfield said that approximately 200 people took the course, and it is available through a massive open online course format. The course features multi-media materials and is self-paced.
