The Sangamon, Illinois County Zoning Board of Appeals voted to deny a reclassification of a property from an agricultural district to a neighborhood business district during a recent meeting.
The area in question features a single-family residence and barn facilities. The staff recommended the denial of this shift in zoning because the land is considered to be suitable for agricultural use exclusively. If the request was approved the owners would have four principal uses for the facility, which include boarding and breeding of horses, dog training and kennel facilities, and a park for camping alongside its use as a home.
The staff report also states that following an initial review of the request it was changed to include larger agility areas for dogs, increasing the impact on the area. Proposed uses were determined to be more than the location would be able to handle.
A motion was proposed that denies reclassification to a business district but allows three uses for the facility in question. Under this motion, the location may serve as a home, a kennel limited to 20 dogs following the establishment of appropriate waste disposal, and as a breeding and boarding facility for horses. This motion passed unanimously.
