Benedictine University of Lisle, Illinois detailed its mentorship program in a recent report.
The program allows current students to meet alumni that have found success in the student’s field of study.
The university reports that it established a network of approximately 31,000 former students that represent different levels in their respective fields including: scientific research, computing, the arts, music, law, government, health care, education and business.
Students and alumni typically speak through phone calls and emails on a regular basis and will meet in person during specific university events. The university states that mentors serve as an additional resource for guidance on what internship opportunities should be pursued and other forms of advice.
Mentors are made up those working in their respective fields or those students who have been accepted into graduate and professional programs.
“I hope to offer advice and give my mentee a realistic perspective on the entire process of getting into medical school,” Brett Hoskins, a medical student at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University, said. “One of the most important things about applying to medical school or surviving as a student is staying persistent.”
The university states that this program will conclude at the end of the spring semester with a recognition ceremony and dinner. A new cohort of menthes and mentors will be selected for the next fall semester.
