The Board of Trustees for the University of Illinois (UI) approved a contract this week with William Brothers Construction Inc. to build a student union at the UI Springfield (UIS) campus.

The building will consist of two stories and is planned to be 50,000 square feet in size and will serve as a central area for students and a place to foster community among those on the campus.

The construction contract totaled $12.7 million, and an approximately $6.1 million was granted for other services including ventilation, electricity and plumbing work.

“This project required a lot of creativity and good, old-fashioned hard work,” University President Tim Killee said. “I am deeply grateful to Chancellor Susan Koch, our students and our donors for coming together to give UIS a new centerpiece that will serve students and the community for generations to come.”

The Springfield campus was founded as Sangamon State University and catered to upper class baccalaureate students and graduate students prior to joining the UI system in 1995. The new building will feature dining services, offices and workspaces for student groups, a coffee shop and a ballroom able to accommodate approximately 450 people.

The building is expected to be completed in January 2018.
