Sewer-lining work began this week on Monroe Street between Fifth and Seventh Streets in Springfield.
The area between Fifth and Seventh Streets has been reduced to one lane, and parking will be unavailable on the northern side of Monroe Street. The center and right lanes on Sixth Street also will be closed between Capitol Avenue and Monroe Street due to the location of a manhole. The right lane of Seventh Street between Adams and Monroe Streets also will be closed for this reason.
The Department of Public Works encourages residential owners and businesses in the area to make sure their plumbing-fixture traps have water in them by running or dumping water down their drains. This will prevent the buildup of sewer gases and odors.
Officials expect the project to be completed by the end of the week, weather permitting.
This work was previously carried out between Sixth and Ninth Streets, and additional work was completed between Monroe and Adams Streets on Eighth Street.
The notice also encourages motorists to utilize alternate routes during peak hours. All drivers and pedestrians also are asked to use caution while travelling in the work area and to be aware of work trucks entering and exiting the site.
