Ball Chatham Community Unit School District 5 students suspended 146 times in a single school year

Ball Chatham Community Unit School District 5 reported 146 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 146 students during the year. That equates to 3.1 percent of the 4,714 students enrolled.

Of the 146 out-of-school suspensions, 113 were given to boys and 33 were given to girls, including 83 elementary or middle schoolers and 63 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for violence without physical injury. The category includes 53 incidents. There were 41 incidents of unspecified reasons. For 67 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
