Ball Chatham Community Unit School District 5 issued the following announcement on Oct. 12.
In collaboration with a group of volunteer students, GHS sponsored many different activities this week (Mental Health Awareness Week), designed to help educate students about the barriers to prevention and early intervention to mental health treatment because of stigma and discrimination.
Throughout this week, students pledged to end the silence by providing a safe space for persons to discuss mental health, listen to mental health experiences without judgment, be knowledgeable of available resources, treat every person as a capable and valuable individual, and speak out against stigma and discrimination towards mental illness. In addition, yoga, and guided meditation classes were offered; a local artist showed, through creating pottery, her outlet for stress reduction; a motivational speaker talked with students; a therapy dog was brought in; positive messages were put on each locker; and each student was given a “nice note” to send to someone they think could use a little pick-me-up.
