The House of Representatives congratulated schoolchildren from Sangamon County for raising more than $18,000 to buy an artifact involving President Abraham Lincoln and donate it to the state of Illinois.

House Resolution 1271 was adopted during the House floor session on Nov. 27.

Rep. Sara Wojcicki Jimenez (R-Springfield) said during the session that the schoolchildren raised the money to purchase the Minute Book of Sangamon County, which contains certification that Lincoln was admitted to the Illinois State Bar.

"The students are giving it to the state for its 200th birthday," Jimenez said.

Jimenez said students from more than 60 schools participated in the Illinois Proud Penny Drive in an attempt to raise $15,000 to purchase the artifact.

"I'm just so proud of the students of Sangamon County," Jimenez said. "When they brought in all those pennies for two weeks, they brought in more than 1.8 million pennies to purchase the book. It was a wonderfully successful project here in Sangamon County."

Jimenez asked that everyone support the motion.
