Village of La Grange Board of Fire and Police Commissioners met Nov. 20.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

1. CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL

A meeting of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners (BOFPC) of the Village of La Grange was held on November 20, 2019 in the lower level conference room of the Village Hall and was called to order at 6:02 p.m.

PRESENT: (and constituting a quorum): Chairman Hoffenberg, Commissioner Boersma and Commissioner Levato.

ABSENT: None

ALSO PRESENT: Andrianna Peterson, Village Manager, Terrence Vavra, Fire Chief, Kurt Bluder, Police Chief, and Kevin Noreikis, Intern.

2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES- OCTOBER 23, 2019

The minutes of the October 23, 2019 meeting were presented for approval. After consideration, it was moved by Commissioner Levato and seconded by Chairman Hoffenberg that the minutes be approved. Motion carried.

3. BUSINESS AT HAND

A. Amendment – Police Officer Final Eligibility List – Chief Bluder provided an update to the Commission regarding one candidate on the eligibility roster (Sanchez) who has either declined additional consideration in the hiring process for Police Officer, or has been determined to be ineligible to continue in the hiring process.

After consideration, a motion was made by Commissioner Levato and seconded by Commissioner Boersma to strike Candidate Sanchez from the Police Officer Final Eligibility List. Motion carried.

B. Conditional Offer of Employment – Police Officer – Chief Bluder reported to the Commission that in preparation to fill the vacant Police Officer position and in anticipation of the start of the Police Academy in January of 2020, the Police Department conducted a background investigation of candidate Laura Ramirez. Chief Bluder recommends that based upon the findings of this inquiry, the BOFPC make a conditional job offer to Laura Ramirez, and proceed with the remaining steps within the hiring process.

After consideration, a motion was made by Commissioner Levato and seconded by Commissioner Boersma to extend a conditional offer to Laura Ramirez. Motion Carried.

C. Approval Police Officer Initial Eligibility Register – Chief Bluder updated the commission on the Police Officer Eligibility Process. On Saturday, November 2, 2019, IO Solutions conducted a written exam for the position of Police Officer. Thirty-Seven (37) individuals completed the application process and thirty-two (32) sat for the exam. A score of 70 or above was considered passing, as approved by the BOFPC. Twenty (20) candidates passed the written exam. The submittal of preference points must be made within ten days after the approval date of the Initial Eligibility Register.

After consideration, a motion to approve the Police Officer Initial Eligibility Register was made by Commissioner Boersma and seconded by Commissioner Levato. Motion Carried.

D. Amendment – Firefighter/Paramedic Final Eligibility List – Chief Vavra provided an update to the commission regarding one candidate on the current eligibility register (Legan) who has either declined additional consideration in the hiring for Firefighter/Paramedic, or has been determined to be ineligible to continue in the hiring process.

After consideration, a motion to strike candidate Legan from the current Firefighter/Paramedic eligibility list was made by Commissioner Boersma and seconded by Commissioner Levato. Motion Carried.

E. Oral Interviews – Firefighter/Paramedic – Oral interviews for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic were held.

4. OLD BUSINESS

A. Police Sergeant Promotional Process Update – Chief Bluder updated the Commission on the Police Sergeant Promotional Process. An orientation for the Police Sergeant Promotional Process was held Friday, September 27, 2019. Nine of the eligible 16 candidates will be taking the promotional exam. The written exam was moved to December 2, 2019 in order to accommodate staff availably. An assessment center for the position will be held December 9, 2019.

5. NEW BUSINESS

A. Discussion – Next Meeting Date – The commission discussed the next available date for a meeting. The next BOFPC meeting will be held either Wednesday, December 4 2019, or Wednesday, December 18, 2019.

6. PUBLIC COMMENT

7. CLOSED SESSION

8. ADJOURNMENT

Since there was no further business before the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, it was moved by Chairman Hoffenberg and seconded by Commissioner Boersma that the meeting was adjourned at 8:01 p.m.
