BALL-CHATHAM COMMUNITY UNIT SCHOOL DISTRICT 5: Behind the Wheel Instruction to Begin in June

Drive

Ball-Chatham Community Unit School District 5 issued the following announcement on June 6.

On June 4, the Ball-Chatham School District received communication from the Illinois State Board of Education on how schools can safely begin offering “Behind the Wheel” this summer.

GHS administrators, in collaboration with our Driver's Education instructors, will follow the safety guidelines outlined by the ISBE and Illinois Department of Public Health (see below). Instructors will begin communicating with students and families next week in regards to when they are scheduled for Behind the Wheel instruction. Those students who had begun Behind the Wheel before the COVID closure will be scheduled first. Thereafter, Driver's Ed teachers will contact students two weeks in advance of their scheduled Behind the Wheel instruction. They will be scheduled in birth date order, just as they are during the school year.

Students and parents should check their email regularly throughout the summer for their scheduled instruction days and times. If there are any conflicts, or if the student/family are uncomfortable receiving in-person instruction at that time, please communicate this with the instructor.

Only two students and one instructor will be allowed in a car at a time, and we are currently 3 months behind. Unfortunately, we may not be able to provide instruction to all students this summer.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact Mr. Ryan Green at rgreen@bcsd5.org.

Safety Guidelines outlined by ISBE and IDPH:

Only two students and one instructor per vehicle will be allowed.Face coverings must be worn, unless medically contraindicated.

Eating and drinking in the vehicle is prohibited.

Windows are to be open whenever possible.

Hand hygiene with soap and water or hand sanitizer, as appropriate, should take place before and after driving and, at the minimum, upon completion. Hand sanitizer will be placed in each vehicle.

Steering wheel, door handles, seat belt fasteners, controls/dials that the driver would come in contact with, keys, etc. will be cleaned and disinfected in between each behind-the-wheel session.

Regular routine cleaning and disinfecting of the seats will be conducted
