Ball-Chatham Community Unit School District 5 issued the following announcement on June 12.
“Summer Slide” is real, and in the case of reading skills, not a good thing. Research from Harvard Graduate School of Education says, “On average, students lose 2.6 months of learning in math during the summer break.” The Department of Education in Colorado said that “On average students lose 1-2 months of reading during the summer with those learning losses adding up each summer.” This loss happens if students purely leave school at school. Meaning, that they only work on numeracy and literacy while at school. There are many ways to prevent the “Summer Slide” and below are some resources and ideas!
