A bill that would allow authorities to remove pets from the homes of individuals known to be abusers was among those recently moved to the next phase by the Illinois House Judiciary Criminal Committee.
Sponsored by Rep. Daniel Didech (D-Buffalo Grove), House Bill 168 seeks to amend the Human Care for Animals Act to allow for the removal.
Individuals with at least two prior convictions of aggravated cruelty to animals would be barred from owning or having custody of any animal.
Sponsored by Rep. Sonya Harper (D-Chicago), The Firearm Violence Prevention and Reduction Study Act also advanced, with supporters seeking to create a 10-year study on steps the state can take to decrease deaths and injury caused by guns.
Finally, House Bill 434 would expand the options Illinoisans have for expunging arrest and court records.
If passed, the measure, sponsored by Rep. LaShawn Ford (D-Chicago), would pave the way for defendants whose criminal charges are dismissed with prejudice or result in acquittal to have records relating to those charges expunged at no cost to the defendant.
