Q3 2022 Recap: 5 parolees from Sangamon County convicted of homicide set for release

There were five offenders convicted of homicide living in Sangamon County released on parole during the third quarter of 2022, according to Illinois Department of Corrections data obtained by the Sangamon Sun.

The data shows all of the released offenders among the parolees were men. The median age of the parolees sentenced for homicide was 49. The youngest parolee was a 44-year-old man sentenced in 2001, and the oldest was a 68-year-old man sentenced in 2003.

The offender who had been incarcerated the longest was Jason L. Shelton. He was convicted in 1998 when he was 25 years old. He is now 50.

Under state law, paroled offenders are still in legal custody of the IDOC, meaning they can be taken back to a correctional center at any time if the state has probable cause or a warrant.
