State Senator Tom Bennett | Illinois General Assembly
State Senator Tom Bennett (R-Gibson City) recently hosted high school students from the 53rd Senate District in Springfield as part of his Youth Advisory Council (YAC) program. The initiative aims to educate students about the state's legislative process and inspire the next generation.
"I want the students to realize it is up to them where we go in the future," said Sen. Bennett. "I am deeply appreciative of the opportunity to spark inspiration and offer guidance to the next generation."
The YAC program includes two meetings per school year. Students have the chance to interact with local leaders, propose new legislation ideas, and engage in mock committee hearings at the Illinois State Capitol.
One participant, Normal Community High School student Sophia Boyer, expressed enthusiasm, stating, "I have developed a big interest in politics. This is a great opportunity to work with one of our State Senators, have our voices heard, and act as a voice for the youth."
During the recent meeting, students assumed different roles related to the legislative process, such as lawmakers, concerned citizens, lobbyists, and reporters. This hands-on experience provided valuable insights into how government functions.
Coal City High School student Reis Scheer emphasized the importance of such programs, stating, "It is important for students to learn about how government works because we are the future. I would most definitely encourage any student to take part in this because it is something you do not get to experience too often."
Sen. Bennett's YAC program is an annual opportunity for high school students in the 53rd Senate District. Interested students are encouraged to inquire with their teachers or principals about participating in the future.
