The Illinois College softball team secured a decisive sweep against Monmouth in a Midwest Conference doubleheader on Wednesday at Jessica Kamp Field. The Lady Blues improved their record to 13-18 overall and 8-2 in league play, while the Fighting Scots fell to 5-24 and 3-2.
In the first game, Illinois College won 6-2, with Julia Drake striking out 11 batters and Jaycie Edwards driving in four runs. After Monmouth scored in the first inning, Edwards responded with a two-run single for IC. She added a two-run double in the third inning and later scored on an error. Kayla Serpa contributed by grounding out to score Claudia Adam in the fourth inning. Drake allowed five hits and two runs (one earned) during her performance.
The second game saw Illinois College overcome a 5-1 deficit to win 15-7, scoring 14 runs over the last four innings. Monmouth initially led after three innings, but IC's offense surged with contributions from Cheyenne Anderson, Megan Doolittle, Calynn Gicante, Allison Mortland, and Edwards. Taylor Henry pitched four innings of relief for her second win of the season.
Gicante led the offense with four hits in five at-bats, while Anderson drove in three runs. Five other players each had two RBIs.
Illinois College will host Eureka on Sunday for Senior Day at Jessica Kamp Field.
