Recent concerns have emerged about exposure to hazardous substances in Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) facilities. This has prompted State Senator Tom Bennett, State Senator Terri Bryant, and State Representative Dennis Tipsword to meet with staff at Pontiac Correctional Center. They discussed ongoing drug exposure incidents and possible solutions.
Senator Bennett stated, “Our correctional staff are on the frontlines, facing escalating dangers every day. The pickets last week make it clear that the Administration must step up and prioritize the safety of these men and women.” He emphasized the need for comprehensive safety measures from Governor Pritzker and IDOC leadership.
Reports indicate that dangerous substances are being sent to inmates on paper, risking both staff and inmate safety. AFSCME, representing correctional officers, released a report detailing these incidents across IDOC facilities.
Senator Bryant remarked, “For more than two years, I have been working to bring attention to the dangerous conditions that both correctional officers and residents in our correctional facilities have had to endure for far too long.” She called for swift measures from the Administration.
Rep. Tipsword highlighted a potential solution: digitizing mail through third-party vendors. He stated, “Safe mail in prisons and jails is not something new,” noting its implementation in other states. He urged immediate action from the Governor and Director before another death occurs.
The lawmakers continue advocating for enhanced safety within Illinois correctional facilities, urging prompt administrative action.
